POWDERCOAT AFTERCARE AND MAINTENANCE PROGRAM
-
PURPOSE OF THIS AFTERCARE PROGRAM
1.1 This Aftercare and Maintenance Program provides recommended care, cleaning and maintenance instructions for powder-coated and colour-matched snorkels, airboxes, intake pipes and associated components supplied by Moonlight Stainless 4WD Performance.
1.2 Powder coating is a durable protective finish; however, it is not completely maintenance-free and may be affected by environmental exposure, physical impact, chemicals, contamination, abrasion, UV exposure and incorrect cleaning methods.
1.3 Components fitted to four-wheel-drive vehicles may be exposed to dust, mud, salt, moisture, road grime, stone chips, chemicals, engine-bay contaminants, heat, UV exposure and harsh off-road conditions.
1.4 Regular cleaning, inspection and appropriate maintenance will assist in preserving the appearance, colour, gloss level and condition of the powder-coated finish.
1.5 This document is intended as a practical maintenance guide and should be retained by the Customer for future reference.

GENERAL CARE REQUIREMENTS
2.1 Powder-coated and colour-matched components should be kept clean and regularly inspected.
2.2 Customers should inspect the components during routine vehicle washing and servicing.
2.3 Particular attention should be given to areas where dirt, mud, water, salt or other contaminants may accumulate.
2.4 Contaminants should not be allowed to remain on the powder-coated surface for unnecessarily long periods.
2.5 Powder coating provides a protective surface finish, but prolonged exposure to harsh environmental conditions or unsuitable cleaning products can result in staining, fading, chalking, gloss reduction, surface deterioration or coating failure.

INITIAL CARE AFTER INSTALLATION
3.1 Newly installed powder-coated components should be handled carefully during the initial period following installation.
3.2 Where applicable, allow the coating to fully cure in accordance with the coating manufacturer's requirements before subjecting the surface to aggressive cleaning or chemical exposure.
3.3 Do not use abrasive products, harsh chemicals or unsuitable cleaning products on newly coated surfaces.
3.4 Avoid unnecessary contact with the coating using dirty, oily or contaminated materials.
3.5 Any protective film, residue, adhesive or manufacturing residue should be removed using a suitable powder-coating-safe cleaning method.
3.6 Do not use sharp tools or abrasive materials to remove stickers, adhesive or contamination from the coating.

REGULAR CLEANING OF POWDER-COATED SNORKELS
4.1 The external surface of a powder-coated snorkel should be cleaned regularly.
4.2 For vehicles used primarily on sealed roads, cleaning should generally be undertaken every 2–4 weeks or as required by the vehicle's environment and use.
4.3 Vehicles regularly used off-road, in dusty environments, near beaches or in coastal areas should be cleaned more frequently.
4.4 Dirt, dust, mud, insects, bird droppings, salt and road grime should not be allowed to accumulate unnecessarily.
4.5 The snorkel should initially be rinsed with clean water to remove loose dirt and abrasive particles.
4.6 A mild, pH-neutral automotive detergent may then be used with a clean microfibre cloth, soft sponge or suitable washing mitt.
4.7 The surface should be thoroughly rinsed after cleaning.
4.8 Where practical, dry the powder-coated surface using a clean microfibre towel or allow it to dry naturally.

CLEANING OF POWDER-COATED AIRBOXES
5.1 External surfaces of powder-coated airboxes should be regularly inspected and cleaned.
5.2 Particular attention should be given to lower areas where dust, mud, water and debris may accumulate.
5.3 The exterior may be cleaned using clean water and a mild automotive detergent.
5.4 Do not use abrasive brushes, steel wool, scouring pads or aggressive cleaning products.
5.5 Where the airbox incorporates removable panels, lids or serviceable components, these should be handled carefully.
5.6 Care should be taken to prevent excessive water from entering the airbox or intake system during cleaning.

CLEANING OF POWDER-COATED INTAKE PIPES
6.1 Powder-coated intake pipes should be cleaned externally using clean water and a mild automotive detergent.
6.2 Avoid abrasive cleaning products that may scratch, dull or damage the powder-coated surface.
6.3 Particular care should be taken around bends, joins and areas where the pipe may contact other components.
6.4 If the intake pipe has been exposed to mud, dust or other contaminants, these should be removed before they harden onto the surface.
6.5 Do not use sharp objects or metal tools to remove dried contaminants from the powder-coated surface.

SURFACE CONTAMINATION
7.1 Powder-coated surfaces can accumulate contaminants that may affect the appearance and condition of the finish.
7.2 Common contaminants include:
(a) salt;
(b) road grime;
(c) brake dust;
(d) mud;
(e) dirt;
(f) oils;
(g) fuel;
(h) exhaust deposits;
(i) chemicals;
(j) bird droppings;
(k) insects; and
(l) other environmental contaminants.
7.3 Contamination should be removed as soon as reasonably practicable.
7.4 Allowing contaminants to remain on the surface for extended periods may increase the likelihood of staining, discolouration, gloss reduction or surface deterioration.

CHEMICAL EXPOSURE
8.1 Powder-coated surfaces should be protected from unnecessary exposure to harsh chemicals.
8.2 Avoid prolonged contact with:
(a) strong acids;
(b) strong alkaline cleaners;
(c) solvents;
(d) paint thinners;
(e) brake cleaner;
(f) aggressive degreasers;
(g) fuel;
(h) battery acid;
(i) chlorine-containing products;
(j) industrial chemicals; and
(k) other corrosive substances.
8.3 If a chemical or automotive fluid is accidentally spilled onto the powder-coated surface, rinse the affected area thoroughly with clean water as soon as reasonably practicable.
8.4 Do not allow chemical residue to dry on the powder-coated surface.
8.5 Where a specialist cleaning product is required, confirm that it is suitable for powder-coated automotive surfaces before use.

IRON FALLOUT AND ROAD-BORNE CONTAMINATION
9.1 Powder-coated snorkels, airboxes and intake pipes may be exposed to airborne and road-borne contaminants containing iron and other metallic particles.
9.2 These contaminants may originate from sources including:
(a) brake dust;
(b) rail and industrial dust;
(c) road surface particles;
(d) vehicle and machinery wear;
(e) airborne metallic particles;
(f) construction and mining environments; and
(g) other environmental sources.
9.3 Iron-containing particles may settle onto the powder-coated surface and may create orange, brown or rust-coloured spots.
9.4 These spots may be external contamination rather than failure of the powder coating or corrosion of the underlying component.
9.5 Regular cleaning and appropriate decontamination can assist in preventing the build-up of iron fallout.
9.6 Where iron fallout is present, a suitable automotive iron-fallout or iron-decontamination product may be used only where the product manufacturer confirms that it is suitable for the particular powder-coated finish.
9.7 The decontamination product must be applied strictly in accordance with the product manufacturer's instructions.
9.8 The product should not be allowed to dry on the powder-coated surface unless the manufacturer specifically permits this.
9.9 After treatment, the surface should be thoroughly rinsed with clean water.
9.10 Customers should avoid aggressive rubbing, abrasive cleaning or polishing when attempting to remove iron fallout from powder-coated surfaces.

BORE WATER AND MINERAL CONTAMINATION
10.1 Customers should avoid washing powder-coated snorkels, airboxes and intake pipes with untreated bore water wherever reasonably practicable.
10.2 Bore water may contain elevated levels of iron, manganese, salts, minerals and other dissolved substances.
10.3 When bore water dries on a powder-coated surface, dissolved minerals and contaminants may leave deposits, staining and discolouration.
10.4 Depending on the mineral content and chemical composition of the bore water, repeated or prolonged exposure may contribute to staining, mineral deposits, surface deterioration or other changes to the appearance of the coating.
10.5 Bore-water exposure should therefore be treated as a potential environmental contaminant and should not be assumed to be equivalent to clean, treated mains water.
10.6 If bore water is used to wash or rinse the vehicle, the powder-coated components should be thoroughly rinsed afterwards with clean, suitable fresh water.
10.7 Bore water should not be allowed to dry naturally on the powder-coated surface where reasonably practicable.
10.8 Particular care should be taken where bore-water sprinklers, irrigation systems or vehicle-washing systems may spray untreated bore water directly onto powder-coated components.
10.9 Bore water containing elevated levels of iron or other minerals may leave orange, brown, white or chalky deposits on the surface.
10.10 Where bore-water staining or mineral deposits are present, a suitable powder-coating-safe cleaning or decontamination product may be used in accordance with the product manufacturer's instructions.
10.11 Customers should not use aggressive acids, abrasive compounds, steel wool or unsuitable chemical products in an attempt to remove bore-water staining.
10.12 Where bore-water exposure has resulted in permanent staining or deterioration of the coating, professional assessment may be required.
10.13 Staining, discolouration or surface deterioration resulting from untreated bore water, mineral deposits or environmental water exposure should be treated as environmental exposure and distinguished from a manufacturing defect, subject to any rights or remedies that cannot lawfully be excluded, restricted or modified under the Australian Consumer Law.

PRESSURE WASHING
11.1 Pressure washing may be used carefully to clean powder-coated snorkels, airboxes and intake pipes.
11.2 The pressure washer nozzle should not be held directly against the powder-coated surface.
11.3 Excessive pressure or very close-range pressure washing may damage, chip or lift the coating.
11.4 Particular care should be taken around:
(a) edges;
(b) joins;
(c) seals;
(d) mounting areas;
(e) damaged areas; and
(f) intake openings.
11.5 Pressure washing should never be directed into the snorkel intake opening.
11.6 High-pressure water should not be intentionally forced into any intake opening, airbox opening, drain, seal or connection.
11.7 Cleaning the exterior of the snorkel does not require water to be directed into the intake system.

SNORKEL INTAKE OPENING
12.1 The snorkel intake opening should be kept clear of:
(a) leaves;
(b) insects;
(c) mud;
(d) dust;
(e) plastic;
(f) debris; and
(g) other obstructions.
12.2 The intake opening should be visually inspected regularly.
12.3 Do not use tools or objects that may damage the coating or intake opening when removing debris.
12.4 Where the snorkel incorporates an additional intake accessory, pre-cleaner, ram head or other component, that component should also be maintained in accordance with its manufacturer's instructions.

WATER EXPOSURE AND WATER CROSSINGS
13.1 A snorkel does not, by itself, make a vehicle's engine or intake system waterproof.
13.2 Water crossings can expose the vehicle to significant risks beyond the snorkel itself.
13.3 Customers are responsible for understanding the limitations of their vehicle, intake system and associated components before undertaking water crossings.
13.4 After significant water exposure, customers should inspect the snorkel, airbox and intake system for signs of water entry, contamination or damage.
13.5 If water is suspected to have entered the intake system, the vehicle should not be operated until the intake system has been appropriately inspected.

DUST, DIRT AND OFF-ROAD USE
14.1 Off-road driving can expose powder-coated components to significant quantities of dust, dirt and mud.
14.2 Components should be inspected after significant off-road use.
14.3 Mud should be removed before it dries and hardens where reasonably practical.
14.4 Dried mud should be softened with water rather than aggressively scraped from the powder-coated surface.
14.5 Do not use sharp tools, metal scrapers or abrasive tools to remove contamination.

SALT WATER AND COASTAL USE
15.1 Salt and marine environments can contribute to deterioration of powder-coated finishes.
15.2 Vehicles regularly operated near beaches or salt water require increased cleaning and inspection.
15.3 After beach or salt-water exposure, the snorkel, airbox and intake pipe should be thoroughly rinsed with fresh water.
15.4 Salt deposits should not be allowed to remain on the powder-coated surface.
15.5 Particular attention should be given to:
(a) joins;
(b) edges;
(c) mounting areas;
(d) brackets;
(e) clamps; and
(f) areas where moisture may collect.

COLOUR-MATCHED FINISHES
16.1 Moonlight Stainless 4WD Performance will use reasonable care to achieve the requested colour and finish using the colour reference, sample, paint code or specification supplied or approved by the Customer.
16.2 Colour-matched powder coating may exhibit minor variations in colour, gloss, texture or appearance.
16.3 Variations may occur due to differences in:
(a) substrate material;
(b) coating batches;
(c) application conditions;
(d) curing conditions;
(e) surface preparation;
(f) lighting;
(g) viewing angle;
(h) production processes; and
(i) the original vehicle paint or finish.
16.4 A powder-coated colour match should therefore be assessed under appropriate lighting and viewing conditions.
16.5 Minor variations that are reasonably attributable to the characteristics of powder coating, the substrate or the original colour are not necessarily evidence of a coating defect.
16.6 Where a Customer supplies a physical sample, colour reference or specification, Moonlight will use reasonable care to work to that reference or specification.
16.7 Customers should understand that an exact visual match between powder coating and an existing vehicle paint finish cannot always be guaranteed due to differences between powder coating and automotive paint systems.

POWDER-COATING FINISHES AND GLOSS LEVELS
17.1 Powder coating may be supplied in different finishes including gloss, satin, semi-gloss, matte or textured finishes.
17.2 The appearance of the coating may vary depending on the product selected and the substrate underneath.
17.3 Texture and gloss levels should be assessed in appropriate lighting.
17.4 Certain finishes may show fingerprints, dust, scratches, water marks or other surface contamination more readily than others.
17.5 Customers should use appropriate cleaning methods for the particular finish supplied.

SCRATCHES, STONE CHIPS AND IMPACT DAMAGE
18.1 Powder-coated components may be exposed to physical impacts from stones, branches, tools, equipment and other objects.
18.2 Physical impacts may chip, scratch, dent or damage the powder coating.
18.3 Stone chips and impact damage are considered normal risks associated with vehicle use, particularly off-road use.
18.4 Customers should inspect components after significant off-road use or physical impact.
18.5 Damaged areas should be addressed promptly to reduce the likelihood of further deterioration.

SCRATCHES AND ABRASIVE DAMAGE
19.1 Customers should not use abrasive pads, steel wool, cutting compounds, polishing compounds or other abrasive materials on powder-coated surfaces unless specifically confirmed as suitable for that particular coating.
19.2 Scrubbing with excessive pressure may create visible marks or reduce the gloss of the coating.
19.3 If a scratch or mark is identified, customers should first clean the area using the recommended cleaning procedure.
19.4 Do not attempt to sand, buff or polish a powder-coated surface without understanding that doing so may permanently alter the coating.

HEAT AND ENGINE-BAY EXPOSURE
20.1 Powder-coated intake components located within the engine bay may be exposed to elevated temperatures.
20.2 Customers should ensure that components are installed with appropriate clearances from exhaust components and other significant heat sources.
20.3 Excessive heat may cause colour change, gloss reduction, discolouration or deterioration of a powder-coated finish.
20.4 If unusual deformation, cracking, bubbling, lifting or other significant coating damage is observed, the component should be inspected.

POWDER-COATING DAMAGE AND COATING FAILURE
21.1 Customers should regularly inspect the coating for:
(a) chips;
(b) scratches;
(c) peeling;
(d) lifting;
(e) blistering;
(f) bubbling;
(g) cracking;
(h) corrosion beneath the coating;
(i) discolouration; and
(j) other unusual changes.
21.2 Any suspected coating failure should be investigated promptly.
21.3 Where coating damage is identified, customers should avoid further disturbing the affected area until it has been assessed where a warranty or manufacturing claim may be involved.

CLEANING PRODUCTS
22.1 Cleaning products should be specifically suitable for powder-coated automotive surfaces or confirmed by the product manufacturer as safe for use on powder coating.
22.2 Avoid products containing aggressive acids, strong alkalis, abrasive compounds, solvents or other substances that may damage the coating.
22.3 Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
22.4 If unsure whether a cleaning product is suitable, contact the product manufacturer or Moonlight before use.
22.5 Do not mix different chemical cleaning products unless the manufacturers specifically confirm that they are compatible.

WAXES, SEALANTS AND PROTECTIVE PRODUCTS
23.1 Suitable automotive waxes, sealants or protective products may be used where appropriate.
23.2 Customers should confirm compatibility before application.
23.3 Products intended for painted or powder-coated automotive surfaces may assist in maintaining the appearance and cleanliness of the finish when used correctly.
23.4 Avoid products containing aggressive solvents or abrasive compounds unless specifically approved for the particular powder-coated finish.

MAINTENANCE OF DAMAGED AREAS
24.1 Where a powder-coated surface has been chipped or scratched, the affected area should be cleaned and assessed.
24.2 Do not use aggressive sanding or grinding unless the surface is being professionally repaired or refinished.
24.3 Where the underlying metal becomes exposed, prompt attention may assist in reducing the risk of environmental corrosion.
24.4 Any repair coating, touch-up product or refinishing system should be compatible with the existing coating and applied in accordance with the product manufacturer's instructions.

EDGES, JOINS AND CONTACT AREAS
25.1 Particular attention should be given to joins, edges and areas where components meet.
25.2 These areas may retain moisture, dirt and contaminants.
25.3 Keep these areas clean and free from accumulated mud, dust and debris.
25.4 Inspect these areas during routine vehicle servicing and cleaning.

INSPECTION SCHEDULE
26.1 Customers should visually inspect powder-coated snorkels, airboxes and intake pipes regularly.
26.2 Inspection should occur:
(a) during routine vehicle washing;
(b) during routine servicing;
(c) after significant off-road use;
(d) after beach or salt-water exposure;
(e) after significant dust or mud exposure;
(f) after physical impact; and
(g) before and after extended vehicle storage.
26.3 Customers should inspect for visible staining, coating damage, corrosion, physical damage and accumulated contamination.
26.4 Any significant change in the condition of the coating should be investigated promptly.

HARSH-ENVIRONMENT MAINTENANCE
27.1 Vehicles operating in harsh environments require more frequent cleaning and inspection.
27.2 Harsh environments include:
(a) beach use;
(b) salt water;
(c) coastal environments;
(d) mining environments;
(e) construction environments;
(f) heavy mud;
(g) regular off-road use;
(h) dusty environments;
(i) chemically contaminated environments; and
(j) other corrosive or abrasive environments.
27.3 Following exposure to a harsh environment, customers should:
(a) rinse the snorkel, airbox and intake components with fresh water;
(b) remove accumulated mud, salt and contaminants;
(c) clean the surfaces using an appropriate powder-coating-safe product;
(d) inspect for coating damage;
(e) inspect for scratches and physical damage;
(f) check the snorkel intake opening for obstructions; and
(g) allow the components to dry thoroughly.

STORAGE
28.1 Where practical, vehicles should be stored in a dry and ventilated environment.
28.2 Prolonged exposure to moisture, salt, chemicals and contaminants may increase the risk of staining and coating deterioration.
28.3 If a vehicle is stored for an extended period after exposure to salt, mud or other contaminants, the snorkel, airbox and intake components should be cleaned before storage.

IMPORTANT MAINTENANCE INFORMATION
29.1 Powder coating should not be considered completely maintenance-free.
29.2 The appearance and condition of a powder-coated finish may change over time depending on vehicle use and environmental exposure.
29.3 No powder-coated finish can reasonably be expected to remain completely free from staining, fading, gloss changes, chips, scratches or surface changes indefinitely when subjected to severe environmental conditions.
29.4 The appearance and condition of powder-coated snorkels, airboxes and intake pipes may be affected by:
(a) vehicle use;
(b) environmental exposure;
(c) cleaning practices;
(d) chemical exposure;
(e) physical impact;
(f) salt;
(g) moisture;
(h) atmospheric contaminants;
(i) iron fallout;
(j) bore water;
(k) UV exposure;
(l) heat exposure; and
(m) general maintenance.
29.5 Regular cleaning and inspection are recommended to help maintain the appearance and condition of the coating.

POWDER-COATING WARRANTY AND AUSTRALIAN CONSUMER LAW
30.1 Moonlight Stainless 4WD Performance provides a voluntary 12-month warranty against defects in workmanship and coating application for powder-coated and colour-matched items, commencing from the date of supply or completion of the powder-coating service, subject to the terms of the applicable warranty.
30.2 The voluntary warranty is intended to cover defects attributable to the powder-coating process, including premature peeling, flaking, blistering or coating failure where the failure is caused by defective preparation, application or curing.
30.3 The voluntary warranty does not cover damage or deterioration caused by circumstances including, but not limited to:
(a) stone chips;
(b) impacts;
(c) scratches;
(d) abrasions;
(e) normal wear and tear;
(f) off-road damage;
(g) misuse;
(h) accidents;
(i) harsh chemicals;
(j) solvents;
(k) acids;
(l) alkaline cleaners;
(m) salt or marine exposure;
(n) bore water;
(o) iron fallout;
(p) environmental contamination;
(q) incorrect cleaning;
(r) abrasive cleaning;
(s) modifications;
(t) grinding;
(u) welding;
(v) drilling;
(w) repairs undertaken after coating;
(x) installation or use contrary to instructions; or
(y) other damage occurring after supply that is not attributable to a manufacturing or coating defect.
30.4 These exclusions apply to the voluntary warranty only and do not exclude, restrict or modify any rights or remedies that cannot lawfully be excluded, restricted or modified under the Australian Consumer Law.
30.5 Where a Customer believes that a powder-coated or colour-matched product has a manufacturing defect or otherwise does not comply with a consumer guarantee, the Customer should contact Moonlight Stainless 4WD Performance and provide reasonable information concerning the issue.
30.6 Moonlight may reasonably inspect the product to determine the nature and cause of the reported issue.
30.7 Where appropriate and subject to the circumstances and applicable law, Moonlight may offer a repair, replacement, refund or other remedy.
30.8 Any voluntary warranty provided by Moonlight operates in addition to, and does not replace, restrict or limit, the Customer's rights under the Australian Consumer Law.

CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITY FOR AFTERCARE
31.1 Customers are responsible for following the cleaning and maintenance recommendations contained in this Aftercare and Maintenance Program.
31.2 Customers should use reasonable care when cleaning and maintaining powder-coated components.
31.3 Customers should retain records, photographs and relevant information where a coating issue develops and a warranty or manufacturing assessment may be required.
31.4 Customers should contact Moonlight before undertaking substantial repair, refinishing or modification where the Customer believes the issue may be related to a manufacturing or coating defect.

Customers should retain this document for future reference and follow the recommended cleaning, decontamination and maintenance practices appropriate to the environment in which the vehicle and components are used.
Customers acknowledge that powder-coated finishes require appropriate care and that environmental exposure, including salt, iron fallout, road contamination, chemicals, bore water, moisture, UV exposure, physical impacts and other contaminants, may affect the appearance and surface condition of powder coating over time.
RAW STAINLESS STEEL AFTERCARE AND MAINTENANCE PROGRAM

1.2 Raw stainless steel is corrosion-resistant and durable; however, it is not completely maintenance-free or immune to staining, surface contamination, oxidation, tea staining, pitting or corrosion.
1.3 Components fitted to four-wheel-drive vehicles may be exposed to dust, mud, salt, moisture, road grime, chemicals, engine-bay contaminants, heat, UV exposure, iron fallout and other harsh environmental conditions.
1.4 Regular cleaning, appropriate decontamination, inspection and maintenance will assist in preserving the appearance, finish and condition of raw stainless-steel components.
1.5 This document is intended as a practical maintenance guide and should be retained by the Customer for future reference.
- GENERAL CARE REQUIREMENTS

2.5 Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant; however, environmental exposure, contamination and unsuitable cleaning products or methods can cause staining, discolouration, scratching, pitting, etching or corrosion.
- INITIAL CARE AFTER INSTALLATION
3.1 Newly installed raw stainless-steel components should be cleaned before being placed into regular service where required.
3.2 Any protective film, residue, adhesive or manufacturing residue should be removed using an appropriate stainless-steel-safe cleaning method.
3.3 Do not use abrasive products, harsh chemicals or unsuitable metal-cleaning products on the surface.
3.4 Avoid unnecessary contact with the surface using dirty, oily or contaminated materials during installation.
3.5 Customers should inspect the component following installation to ensure that no installation-related marks, scratches or contamination are present.
- REGULAR CLEANING OF STAINLESS-STEEL SNORKELS
4.1 The external surface of a raw stainless-steel snorkel should be cleaned regularly.
4.2 For vehicles used primarily on sealed roads, cleaning should generally be undertaken every 2–4 weeks or as required by the vehicle's environment and use.
4.3 Vehicles regularly used off-road, in dusty environments, near beaches or in coastal areas should be cleaned more frequently.
4.4 Dirt, dust, mud, insects, bird droppings, salt and road grime should not be allowed to accumulate unnecessarily.
4.5 The snorkel should initially be rinsed with clean water to remove loose dirt and abrasive particles.
4.6 A mild, pH-neutral automotive detergent may then be used with a clean microfibre cloth, soft sponge or suitable washing mitt.
4.7 The surface should be thoroughly rinsed after cleaning.
4.8 Where practical, dry the stainless steel using a clean microfibre towel or allow it to dry naturally.
- CLEANING OF RAW STAINLESS-STEEL AIRBOXES
5.1 External surfaces of raw stainless-steel airboxes should be regularly inspected and cleaned.
5.2 Particular attention should be given to lower areas where dust, mud, water and debris may accumulate.
5.3 The exterior may be cleaned using clean water and a mild automotive detergent.
5.4 Do not use abrasive brushes, steel wool, scouring pads or unsuitable metal-cleaning products.
5.5 Where the airbox incorporates removable panels, lids or serviceable components, these should be handled carefully.
5.6 Care should be taken to prevent excessive water from entering the airbox or intake system during cleaning.
- CLEANING OF RAW STAINLESS-STEEL INTAKE PIPES
6.1 Raw stainless-steel intake pipes should be cleaned externally using clean water and a mild automotive detergent.
6.2 Avoid abrasive cleaning products that may scratch or mark the stainless-steel surface.
6.3 Particular care should be taken around bends, joins and areas where the pipe may contact other components.
6.4 If the intake pipe has been exposed to mud, dust or other contaminants, these should be removed before they harden onto the surface.
6.5 Do not use sharp objects or metal tools to remove dried contaminants from the stainless-steel surface.
- STAINLESS-STEEL SURFACE CONTAMINATION
7.1 Raw stainless steel can develop surface staining or discolouration when exposed to contaminants.
7.2 Common contaminants include:
(a) salt;
(b) road grime;
(c) iron particles;
(d) brake dust;
(e) mud;
(f) chemicals;
(g) oils;
(h) exhaust deposits; and
(i) other metallic or environmental contaminants.
7.3 Contamination should be removed as soon as reasonably practicable.
7.4 Allowing contaminants to remain on the surface for extended periods may increase the likelihood of staining, etching, pitting or corrosion.
- CHEMICAL EXPOSURE
8.1 Stainless steel should be protected from unnecessary exposure to harsh chemicals.
8.2 Avoid prolonged contact with:
(a) strong acids;
(b) strong alkaline cleaners;
(c) solvents;
(d) paint thinners;
(e) brake cleaner;
(f) aggressive degreasers;
(g) fuel;
(h) battery acid;
(i) chlorine-containing products;
(j) industrial chemicals; and
(k) other corrosive substances.
8.3 If a chemical or automotive fluid is accidentally spilled onto the stainless-steel surface, rinse the affected area thoroughly with clean water as soon as reasonably practicable.
8.4 Do not allow chemical residue to dry on the stainless-steel surface.
8.5 Where a specialist cleaning product is required, confirm that the product is suitable for stainless steel before use.
- IRON FALLOUT AND ROAD-BORNE CONTAMINATION
9.1 Raw stainless-steel snorkels, airboxes and intake pipes may be exposed to airborne and road-borne contaminants containing iron and other metallic particles.
9.2 These contaminants may originate from sources including:
(a) brake dust;
(b) rail and industrial dust;
(c) road surface particles;
(d) vehicle and machinery wear;
(e) airborne metallic particles;
(f) construction and mining environments; and
(g) other environmental sources.
9.3 Iron-containing particles may settle onto the stainless-steel surface and, when exposed to moisture and environmental conditions, may develop into small orange, brown or rust-coloured spots.
9.4 Rust-coloured spotting does not necessarily mean that the stainless steel itself has structurally corroded. In many cases, the discolouration may be caused by external iron fallout or surface contamination.
9.5 Regular cleaning and decontamination can assist in preventing the build-up of iron fallout and maintaining the appearance of the stainless-steel finish.
9.6 Where iron fallout or rust-coloured spotting is present, a suitable automotive iron-fallout or iron-decontamination product specifically approved for use on stainless steel may be used.
9.7 The decontamination product must be applied strictly in accordance with the product manufacturer's instructions.
9.8 Before using any decontamination product, the Customer should confirm that it is suitable for the particular stainless-steel finish.
9.9 The product should not be allowed to dry on the surface unless the product manufacturer specifically permits this.
9.10 After treatment, the surface should be thoroughly rinsed with clean water and, where appropriate, washed using a suitable stainless-steel-safe automotive cleaning product.
9.11 A suitable stainless-steel polish or protective product may subsequently be used to restore and maintain the appearance of the surface, provided the product is compatible with the particular stainless-steel finish.
9.12 Customers should avoid aggressive polishing, sanding, grinding or abrasive cleaning methods, particularly on brushed, satin or directional finishes.
9.13 Vehicles regularly exposed to coastal conditions, heavy traffic, mining environments, construction sites or other sources of airborne metallic contamination may require more frequent decontamination.
9.14 Customers should inspect the stainless-steel surface regularly and address iron fallout before significant staining or contamination has developed.
- BORE WATER AND MINERAL CONTAMINATION
10.1 Customers should avoid washing raw stainless-steel snorkels, airboxes and intake pipes with untreated bore water wherever reasonably practicable.
10.2 Bore water may contain elevated levels of iron, manganese, salts, minerals and other dissolved substances.
10.3 When bore water dries on stainless steel, dissolved minerals and contaminants may leave deposits, staining and discolouration on the surface.
10.4 Depending on the mineral content and chemical composition of the bore water, repeated or prolonged exposure may contribute to surface staining, discolouration, mineral deposits, pitting or surface etching.
10.5 Bore-water exposure should therefore be treated as a potential environmental contaminant and should not be assumed to be equivalent to clean, treated mains water.
10.6 If bore water is used to wash or rinse the vehicle, the stainless-steel components should be thoroughly rinsed afterwards with clean, suitable fresh water.
10.7 Bore water should not be allowed to dry naturally on the stainless-steel surface where reasonably practicable.
10.8 Particular care should be taken where bore-water sprinklers, irrigation systems or vehicle-washing systems may spray untreated bore water directly onto stainless-steel components.
10.9 Bore water containing elevated levels of iron or other minerals may leave deposits that appear as orange, brown, white or chalky staining.
10.10 Where bore-water staining or mineral deposits are present, a suitable stainless-steel-safe decontamination product may be used in accordance with the product manufacturer's instructions.
10.11 Where iron contamination is present, an appropriate iron-fallout or iron-decontamination product suitable for stainless steel may assist in removing surface contamination.
10.12 Customers should not use aggressive acids, abrasive compounds, steel wool or unsuitable chemical products in an attempt to remove bore-water staining.
10.13 Where bore-water exposure has resulted in visible etching, pitting or permanent surface damage, professional assessment or refinishing may be required.
10.14 Customers should exercise particular care when vehicles are washed using untreated bore water on a regular basis, as repeated exposure and drying of mineral-containing water can progressively affect the appearance and surface condition of raw stainless steel.
10.15 Staining, etching, pitting or discolouration resulting from untreated bore water, mineral deposits or environmental water exposure should be treated as environmental exposure and distinguished from a manufacturing defect, subject to any rights or remedies that cannot lawfully be excluded, restricted or modified under the Australian Consumer Law.
- PRESSURE WASHING
11.1 Pressure washing may be used carefully to clean stainless-steel snorkels, airboxes and intake pipes.
11.2 The pressure washer nozzle should not be held directly against the surface.
11.3 Excessive pressure or very close-range pressure washing may cause physical marking or damage to the surface.
11.4 Particular care should be taken around joins, seals, mounting areas, damaged areas and intake openings.
11.5 Pressure washing should never be directed into the snorkel intake opening.
11.6 High-pressure water should not be intentionally forced into any intake opening, airbox opening, drain, seal or connection.
11.7 Cleaning the exterior of the snorkel does not require water to be directed into the intake system.
- SNORKEL INTAKE OPENING
12.1 The snorkel intake opening should be kept clear of leaves, insects, mud, dust, plastic, debris and other obstructions.
12.2 The intake opening should be visually inspected regularly.
12.3 Do not use tools or objects that may damage the stainless-steel surface or intake opening when removing debris.
12.4 Where the snorkel incorporates an additional intake accessory, pre-cleaner, ram head or other component, that component should also be maintained in accordance with its manufacturer's instructions.
- WATER EXPOSURE AND WATER CROSSINGS
13.1 A stainless-steel snorkel does not, by itself, make a vehicle's engine or intake system waterproof.
13.2 Water crossings can expose the vehicle to significant risks beyond the snorkel itself.
13.3 Customers are responsible for understanding the limitations of their vehicle, intake system and associated components before undertaking water crossings.
13.4 After significant water exposure, customers should inspect the snorkel, airbox and intake system for signs of water entry, contamination or damage.
13.5 If water is suspected to have entered the intake system, the vehicle should not be operated until the intake system has been appropriately inspected.
- DUST, DIRT AND OFF-ROAD USE
14.1 Off-road driving can expose stainless-steel components to significant quantities of dust, dirt and mud.
14.2 Components should be inspected after significant off-road use.
14.3 Mud should be removed before it dries and hardens where reasonably practical.
14.4 Dried mud should be softened with water rather than aggressively scraped from the stainless-steel surface.
14.5 Do not use sharp tools, metal scrapers or abrasive tools to remove contamination.
- SALT WATER AND COASTAL USE
15.1 Salt and marine environments can contribute to stainless-steel staining, tea staining and corrosion.
15.2 Vehicles regularly operated near beaches or salt water require increased cleaning and inspection.
15.3 After beach or salt-water exposure, the snorkel, airbox and intake pipe should be thoroughly rinsed with fresh water.
15.4 Salt deposits should not be allowed to remain on the stainless-steel surface.
15.5 Particular attention should be given to joins, edges, mounting areas, brackets, clamps and areas where moisture may collect.
- TEA STAINING
16.1 "Tea staining" refers to surface discolouration that may occur on stainless steel, particularly in coastal, marine or high-salt environments.
16.2 Tea staining does not necessarily indicate structural failure of the stainless steel.
16.3 The likelihood of tea staining may be increased by salt exposure, coastal environments, high humidity, atmospheric contaminants, dirt accumulation, inadequate cleaning and unsuitable cleaning practices.
16.4 Regular cleaning with fresh water and a suitable stainless-steel cleaning product can assist in reducing the likelihood of tea staining.
16.5 Tea staining should be addressed promptly rather than allowed to build up over extended periods.
- STAINLESS-STEEL CLEANING AND POLISHING
17.1 Stainless-steel-safe cleaning products may be used where appropriate.
17.2 Customers should follow the manufacturer's instructions for any stainless-steel cleaning or polishing product.
17.3 Raw stainless-steel components supplied by Moonlight Stainless 4WD Performance may have a directional grain, brushed finish or polished finish. The direction and appearance of this finish form part of the visual characteristics of the product.
17.4 When cleaning, polishing or attempting to restore the appearance of a raw stainless-steel component with a directional grain, all polishing and finishing work must be performed in the direction of the existing grain.
17.5 Polishing or rubbing across, against or perpendicular to the existing grain direction may create visible scratches, cross-grain marks or other permanent changes to the appearance of the stainless-steel finish.
17.6 Customers must identify the existing grain direction before undertaking any polishing, refinishing or abrasive cleaning.
17.7 Where the grain direction is unclear, customers should contact Moonlight Stainless 4WD Performance before undertaking any polishing or refinishing work.
17.8 Only suitable stainless-steel polishing products, pads, cloths and equipment should be used.
17.9 Avoid steel wool, contaminated abrasive pads, carbon-steel brushes or other materials that may introduce scratches or iron contamination into the stainless-steel surface.
17.10 Excessive pressure, aggressive polishing or repeated polishing in one area may alter the original finish and may result in an uneven appearance.
17.11 If a stainless-steel surface has been scratched or marked, customers should not attempt aggressive sanding or polishing without first considering the existing grain direction and finish.
17.12 Moonlight Stainless 4WD Performance is not responsible for changes to the appearance, scratches, cross-grain marks or other surface damage caused by polishing, sanding, buffing, abrasive cleaning or refinishing undertaken by the Customer or a third party after supply, except to the extent that liability cannot lawfully be excluded or limited.
- CONTAMINATION FROM OTHER METALS
18.1 Contact with carbon steel, mild steel, grinding dust, steel wool or other ferrous materials may introduce iron contamination onto stainless-steel surfaces.
18.2 Iron contamination can result in surface staining that may appear similar to rust.
18.3 Customers should avoid using carbon-steel brushes, ordinary steel wool, contaminated grinding tools or other ferrous materials on stainless-steel surfaces.
18.4 Stainless-steel components should be cleaned using dedicated or appropriately clean stainless-steel-safe equipment.
- HEAT AND ENGINE-BAY EXPOSURE
19.1 Stainless-steel intake components located within the engine bay may be exposed to elevated temperatures.
19.2 Customers should ensure that components are installed with appropriate clearances from exhaust components and other significant heat sources.
19.3 Heat may cause stainless steel to change colour or develop heat-related discolouration.
19.4 Heat discolouration is not necessarily an indication of structural failure.
19.5 If unusual deformation, cracking or other significant physical damage is observed, the component should be inspected.
- STONE CHIPS, IMPACTS AND SCRATCHES
20.1 Stainless-steel snorkels, airboxes and intake pipes may be exposed to physical impacts from stones, branches, tools and other objects.
20.2 Physical impacts may dent, scratch or mark the stainless-steel surface.
20.3 Customers should inspect components after significant off-road use or physical impact.
20.4 Scratches and marks should be cleaned and assessed to determine whether they are superficial or require further attention.
20.5 Deep scratches may expose areas of the surface to increased environmental contamination and should be addressed appropriately.
- MINOR SCRATCHES AND SURFACE MARKS
21.1 Minor surface marks should first be cleaned using the recommended cleaning method.
21.2 Do not use steel wool, aggressive abrasive pads or unsuitable polishing compounds.
21.3 If the cause or severity of a mark is unclear, contact Moonlight before attempting a repair.
21.4 Where the stainless steel has a brushed or directional finish, inappropriate polishing may permanently alter the appearance of the surface.
- RUST AND CORROSION
22.1 Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant but is not completely corrosion-proof.
22.2 Customers should regularly inspect snorkels, airboxes and intake pipes for rust staining, tea staining, discolouration, pitting, corrosion, surface deposits and other unusual changes.
22.3 Any suspected corrosion should be investigated promptly.
22.4 Where corrosion appears unusual or extensive, the Customer should contact Moonlight before undertaking aggressive cleaning or repair.
- EDGES, JOINS AND CONTACT AREAS
23.1 Particular attention should be given to joins, edges and areas where components meet.
23.2 These areas may retain moisture, dirt and contaminants.
23.3 Keep these areas clean and free from accumulated mud, dust and debris.
23.4 Inspect these areas during routine vehicle servicing and cleaning.
- CLEANING PRODUCTS
24.1 Cleaning products should be specifically suitable for stainless steel or confirmed as safe for use on stainless-steel automotive components.
24.2 Avoid products containing aggressive acids, strong alkalis, chlorides, abrasive compounds or other substances that may damage or contaminate stainless steel.
24.3 Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
24.4 If unsure whether a cleaning product is suitable, contact the product manufacturer or Moonlight before use.
- WAXES, SEALANTS AND PROTECTIVE PRODUCTS
25.1 Suitable stainless-steel protective products may be used where appropriate.
25.2 Customers should confirm compatibility before application.
25.3 Products designed to reduce surface contamination or assist with maintaining stainless-steel appearance may be used in accordance with their manufacturer's instructions.
25.4 Avoid products that leave unsuitable residues or are not intended for stainless-steel surfaces.
- INSPECTION SCHEDULE
26.1 Customers should visually inspect raw stainless-steel snorkels, airboxes and intake pipes regularly.
26.2 Inspection should occur:
(a) during routine vehicle washing;
(b) during routine servicing;
(c) after significant off-road use;
(d) after beach or salt-water exposure;
(e) after significant dust or mud exposure;
(f) after physical impact; and
(g) before and after extended vehicle storage.
26.3 Customers should inspect for visible staining, corrosion, physical damage and accumulated contamination.
26.4 Any significant change in the condition of the stainless steel should be investigated promptly.
- WHAT TO DO IF STAINING OR CORROSION IS FOUND
27.1 If staining, tea staining, rust or corrosion is identified, the Customer should:
(a) rinse the affected area with fresh water;
(b) remove loose contamination using an appropriate stainless-steel-safe cleaning method;
(c) avoid further damaging the surface;
(d) photograph the affected area;
(e) record when the issue was identified;
(f) note any relevant environmental exposure; and
(g) contact Moonlight if further assessment is required.
27.2 Customers should avoid aggressive grinding, sanding, polishing or chemical treatment before the condition has been properly assessed where the Customer intends to seek assistance from Moonlight.
- HARSH-ENVIRONMENT MAINTENANCE
28.1 Vehicles operating in harsh environments require more frequent cleaning and inspection.
28.2 Harsh environments include:
(a) beach use;
(b) salt water;
(c) coastal environments;
(d) mining environments;
(e) construction environments;
(f) heavy mud;
(g) regular off-road use;
(h) dusty environments;
(i) chemically contaminated environments; and
(j) other corrosive or abrasive environments.
28.3 Following exposure to a harsh environment, customers should:
(a) rinse the snorkel, airbox and intake components with fresh water;
(b) remove accumulated mud, salt and contaminants;
(c) clean the surfaces using an appropriate stainless-steel-safe product;
(d) inspect for staining and corrosion;
(e) inspect for scratches and physical damage;
(f) check the snorkel intake opening for obstructions; and
(g) allow the components to dry thoroughly.
- STORAGE
29.1 Where practical, vehicles should be stored in a dry and ventilated environment.
29.2 Prolonged exposure to moisture, salt, chemicals and contaminants may increase the risk of staining and corrosion.
29.3 If a vehicle is stored for an extended period after exposure to salt, mud or other contaminants, the snorkel, airbox and intake components should be cleaned before storage.
- IMPORTANT MAINTENANCE INFORMATION
30.1 Raw stainless steel should not be considered completely maintenance-free.
30.2 Stainless steel is designed to provide a high level of corrosion resistance, but environmental conditions can affect its appearance and surface condition.
30.3 No stainless-steel finish can reasonably be expected to remain completely free from staining, discolouration or surface changes indefinitely when subjected to severe environmental conditions.
30.4 The appearance and condition of raw stainless-steel snorkels, airboxes and intake pipes may be affected by:
(a) vehicle use;
(b) environmental exposure;
(c) cleaning practices;
(d) chemical exposure;
(e) physical impact;
(f) salt;
(g) moisture;
(h) atmospheric contaminants;
(i) iron fallout;
(j) bore water;
(k) heat exposure; and
(l) general maintenance.
30.5 Regular cleaning, appropriate iron-fallout decontamination and inspection are recommended to help maintain the appearance and condition of the components.
- AUSTRALIAN CONSUMER LAW
31.1 Nothing in this Aftercare and Maintenance Program is intended to exclude, restrict or modify any consumer guarantee, right or remedy that cannot lawfully be excluded, restricted or modified under the Australian Consumer Law or any other applicable law.
31.2 Any voluntary warranty or aftercare benefit provided by Moonlight Stainless 4WD Performance operates in addition to, and does not replace, restrict or limit, any rights and remedies available to a Customer under the Australian Consumer Law.
31.3 Where a Customer believes that a product has a manufacturing defect or otherwise does not comply with a consumer guarantee, the Customer should contact Moonlight Stainless 4WD Performance and provide reasonable information and evidence concerning the issue so that the matter can be assessed.
31.4 Moonlight Stainless 4WD Performance reserves the right to inspect the product and, where reasonably required, the vehicle or installation to determine the nature and cause of the reported issue, subject always to the Customer's rights under applicable law.
